The Product Manager Job

Being a product manager is not as glamorous as you might think.

At Luxor, we take pride in our approach to building products. The role of Product Managers (PMs) varies widely from company to company and even from day to day.

Product Manager Role

While at some companies the role of the Product Manager is constrained to limited tasks, at Luxor it’s the job where “wears many hats” is the most applicable. To become a successful Product Manager you cannot fill one role, you’ll need to fill many, if not, all roles. If you thrive in fast-paced ambiguous environment and are not afraid to do what it takes while learning new skills you’ll become an outstanding product manager.

Values we embrace as Product Managers

Building over Strategy

While strategy is an essential component of our role, we emphasize action and execution. We value building and shipping tangible features over engaging in endless strategy sessions and presentations. With a plethora of possible projects to work on, the ability to select the most impactful ones quickly and have the energy to finish them is paramount.

You’re relentless about shipping code to production. You prevent issues from falling through the cracks and push through to get the product shipped. The single most important feature you need to focus on is shipping.

Wear ALL Hats

You are akin to swiss-army knives, involved in every phase of the product lifecycle. From delving into customer support inquiries to collaborating on sales strategies, crafting compelling marketing copy to overseeing project management tasks, versatility is key. We value individuals who are willing to roll up their sleeves and tackle the “hard, boring, unglamorous” work with enthusiasm and diligence.

If you ever find yourself thinking, “This is not my job,” look elsewhere—this is not the job for you.

Communication Router

Effective communication is a core skill of a Product Manager. The better you are at bringing the right information to the right person to act on, the faster stuff gets done.

We embrace the depth and clarity that long-form written communication offers over shallow meetings. Long-form written content forces us to engage in critical thinking, enhancing the quality of our ideas and proposals. Furthermore, written communication prevents crucial details from getting lost during a voice meeting and remains accessible for future reference.

Technical Acumen

We thrive in technical environments. We are fluent in engineering language to the point that we can grasp complex technical concepts and articulate them effectively. Technical acumen fosters mutual understanding between Product and Engineering teams and helps us earn the respect of the team responsible for executing our strategies.

While you’re not an engineer, you’re culturally one. You have a deep enough understanding of technical intricacies to recognize that the product doesn’t work by magic alone.

In The Trenches

Being a great Product Manager often means being readily available whenever a situation demands our attention. You’re in the trenches whenever a customer needs our support, you feel the pain of server outages, and you’re the first line of defense.

Moreover, your willingness to be hands-on in critical situations fosters trust and respect within your team. By demonstrating that no task is too small or too daunting, you set a powerful example of dedication and accountability. Your presence in the trenches reinforces the message that every aspect of the product matters, and that you’re committed to delivering the best possible experience to users.
